The Mi'kmaq Native Friendship Centre provides social programs for Urban Aboriginal people and a space for the urban Aboriginal community to gather for a variety of community functions and events. The centre also provides support for housing, employment training and youth and has a strong mandate to support women’s issues.
Each year the Centre hosts and organizes the Sisters in Spirit vigil. In addition, the Centre plays a major role in the December 6th commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Each year, the vigil and march organized by the Halifax and Dartmouth Labour Council winds its way towards the Mi'kmaq Native Friendship Centre, where an aboriginal ceremony and public meeting is held and a community meal is served in honour of the women victims of violence.
