The PSAC Social Justice Fund provides funds to combat poverty by organizing a community garden with Elders and youth introducing food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture based on traditional aboriginal cultivation techniques. The initiative builds on an earlier project addressing violent behaviour in youth. The project began with 15 families, with the hope of including the whole community in the long run. A core group of community members have already started to work together to educate and create a sense of hope to overcome the cycle of poverty in Burnt Church. Community support for this project has been a real success.
