Two Special Events! Meet
Marcelo Sabuc Xalcot
National Coordinator, Campesino Committee of the Highlands of Guatemala (CCDA)
As representative of one of the largest Mayan farmer’s organization in the country, Marcelo Sabuc has received death threats and is facing a series of unfounded charges. Today, the CCDA represents over 30,000 Mayan families in the defense of ancestral territory, the empowerment of women and education and health for all.
Through the growth of cooperatives and sustainable agriculture, the CCDA challenges the ruling elite that has attacked the CCDA through paramilitary violence. This year alone, several members of the CCDA and other Mayan organizations have been killed in a wave of attacks against land rights defenders in the country.
Since 2006, the PSAC Social Justice Fund through Education In Action has been supporting the CCDA and their programs. The Mayan cooperative also produces the equitable and fairly-traded coffee, Café Justicia, which is sold by unions and social organizations across Canada.
